Torture.

By definition, it's the act or practice of inflicting pain. Sometimes in life, I've been both the torturer and the tortured. So it's not a surprise I prefer to stay on the giving end. But right now, I'm dealing with pain caused by my own hand. This is what I get for taking shot after shot of Scotch.

My head pounds like someone took a hammer to it as I wobble down the steps to get some water. Hell! I forgot about the creak on the sixth step, and the noise shoots through me like an explosion.

I must stop drowning in alcohol.

Since Raven left––when was that? Last night? This morning?—I'm trying to accept that she's slipped from my grasp. It's hard. It's damaging my ego.

As I enter the kitchen, Rocco looks up from his phone, and Marcello stops typing.

He scratches his bead. "Someone looks like they've had a rough time."

"Another word, and I'll shoot you." I beeline for water. I chug as Rocco slides a tray with two huge plates of much-needed eggs and buttered toast in front of me, along with mugs of steaming black coffee.

“I doubt you'll be able to shoot him without your head splitting in two, Boss.” Rocco chuckles. "Here’s some breakfast for you and the wild one upstairs."

"Why're you both up this early?" I grumble.

Marcello taps at the laptop again. "It's noon, Boss."

I wince and take a coffee. "Any luck finding out who the girl is?"

"Unfortunately, no."

"How is she anyway?" Rocco's beady light-blue eyes train on me, undoubtedly waiting to keep track of the witch.

I don’t want them to know I fucked up, and she managed to slip away. "She's fine." I pick up the tray. "If you need me… leave me alone."

I head to my room and shut the door with my foot. I startle when Raven throws her leg through the open window, her knee caked in mud.

"We––we need to help them." She heaves, sliding onto the floor, looking like an ink splotch in her voluminous dress.

I power through my hangover. "Them?"

She scrambles to her dainty feet. She's ripped her dress a few more times, and she's cradling some matted dark-red fur. The foul stench makes my stomach churn. There're bones sticking out of whatever the hell she's brought back.

"What the fuck is that?"

"Bunnies," she whispers lovingly. "I found them next to their mother."

"You took them from their den?"

"No, no. Their mother was killed. She was mauled." Raven shifts them from one arm to the other. "Maybe by a fox or something. Thankfully, it spared these."

Narrowing my eyes, I shake my head. "What?"

"I saved all five." She thrusts the mangled animals in my face. "Look at them."

I take a quick look. "They're dead."

"They're all alive." She giggles. "See? Look."

"I am looking. The creatures are dead. You carried back five dead animals. Some with their bones hanging out."

She shakes her head wildly. "How can they be dead?" She shoves the dead kits in front of my face again. "They're here. They're all alive. They're sleeping. That's all.
